The US Supreme Court has overturned a Washington DC ban on private handguns, ruling that Americans have the right to bear arms.

The ruling, by five votes to four, found that the Washington ban violated Americans’ right to bear arms as guaranteed by the US constitution’s second amendment.

Thursday’s ruling, by the highest court in the US, was the justices’ first definitive pronouncement on gun rights in the country’s history.
